Cultural Itinerary in Estoril
Culture is the escape of the soul, it is often said. And that is why trying to get out of the routine, visiting new spaces, coming into contact with new realities is so important for our physical and mental health, especially since it is easy to stay on the sofa on the shortest days of the year.
Estoril is an excellent option for those who want to discover or revisit places with history and beauty. This Portuguese town stands out for its natural beauty, its rich relationship with golf culture (due to the predominance of courses) and, of course, for its privileged location, just a few minutes from Lisbon and Cascais. In addition to the obvious Estoril postcard, the beach, there is an exponential cultural variety in this area.
With that in mind, we have developed a small cultural route in Estoril. On a weekend, start on the idyllic Estoril waterfront, at Casa Portuguesa, in Casal de São Roque. It is a house built on the ruins of an old 17th century fort, whose name was inspired by the historic chapel dedicated to São Roque. This construction, which dates from 1902, was commissioned by Carlos Francisco Ribeiro Ferreira and developed by Raúl Lino. Twelve years later, in 1914, it would be enlarged, also under the supervision of the same architect. For lovers of history and beyond, this is an excellent example of 20th century Modernism, full of innovative, geometric and daring details.
Then, head to the Museum of Portuguese Music, considered a Monument of Public Interest. Located in Casa Verdades de Faria, in Monte Estoril, this museum houses the collections of two prominent Portuguese popular music composers: Michel Giacometti and Fernando Lopes-Graça. You can also find a diverse collection of Portuguese musical instruments, a documentation centre, and a space for recitals. Who knows, you might catch a unique show during your visit!
Maybe you didn't know it, but it also counts as culture, the Estoril Casino is the largest casino in Europe and one of the oldest in operation. Therefore, even if you are not a fan of the game, this is an inescapable space to visit. Due to its architectural grandeur, the casino was also the setting for the filming of the movie 'Casino Royale', from the famous James Bond saga. This fact turns out to be related to the history of the space that, during the Second World War, became a place frequented by spies, exiles and members of the royal families, since Portugal was a neutral country in the conflict.
